Kimball Castle For many summers the Kimball family vacationed at his cottage at Straw's Point, but in the late 1880's he happened to go on Locke's Hill, so called, in Gilford, a bold and impressive promontory rising over Winnipesaukee, NH, and was straightway fascinated and attracted by the superb location. The consequence was that he bought the promontory and erected thereon a substantial summer residence. He built the castle based on one he supposedly saw on the German Rhine.
