Concord, NH Railroad Station

- Benjamin Ames
Kimball was extremely smitten by the railroad life at an early age.
Growing up without a father and only one older brother to help out the
family, he instantly must have idolized his brother. For once they
moved into Concord, NH and his brother John became employed in the Concord
RR work yards, Benjamin spent most of his free time alongside him or just
riding and watching everyone at work.
- On August 1st, 1854, just
days of receiving his degree at Dartmouth College, he entered the employ of
the Concord Railroad as draftsman in the Concord Railroad Machine Shop
- On April 19, 1856 he was
promoted in the Concord Railroad as foreman of the locomotive dept.
- On January 1, 1858 he
succeeded his brother as master mechanic and stayed in that position until
April 1, 1865 when he left to become a member of the firm of Ford & Kimball.
- 1859 - Promoted to
Superintendent of the Locomotive Department.
- Designed the "Tahonto"
Railroad Engine.
- 4/1/1865 - Resigned to
become a member of the firm Ford & Kimball.
- 1873 - Elected director of
the Manchester and North Weare Railroads.
- 1/1879 - Elected to
Concord Railroad Board of Directors, when Gov. Onslow Stearns died.
- 1895 - President of the
Concord & Montreal Railroad, renamed from Concord RR.
- Concord & Montreal renamed
to Concord, Montreal & Lakeshore RR.
- Arranged for the
consolidation of the Boston, Concord & Montreal RR after a bitter fight.
- His offices were in the
Southwest corner of the Passenger station in Concord. Within easy
walking distance from his home on main street.
