Benjamin Ames Kimball

Concord, NH Railroad Station

  • Benjamin Ames Kimball was extremely smitten by the railroad life at an early age.  Growing up without a father and only one older brother to help out the family, he instantly must have idolized his brother.  For once they moved into Concord, NH and his brother John became employed in the Concord RR work yards, Benjamin spent most of his free time alongside him or just riding and watching everyone at work.
  • On August 1st, 1854, just days of receiving his degree at Dartmouth College, he entered the employ of the Concord Railroad as draftsman in the Concord Railroad Machine Shop
  • On April 19, 1856 he was promoted in the Concord Railroad as foreman of the locomotive dept.
  • On January 1, 1858 he succeeded his brother as master mechanic and stayed in that position until April 1, 1865 when he left to become a member of the firm of Ford & Kimball.
  • 1859 - Promoted to Superintendent of the Locomotive Department.
  • Designed the "Tahonto" Railroad Engine.
  • 4/1/1865 - Resigned to become a member of the firm Ford & Kimball.
  • 1873 - Elected director of the Manchester and North Weare Railroads.
  • 1/1879 - Elected to Concord Railroad Board of Directors, when Gov. Onslow Stearns died.
  • 1895 - President of the Concord & Montreal Railroad, renamed from Concord RR.
  • Concord & Montreal renamed to Concord, Montreal & Lakeshore RR.
  • Arranged for the consolidation of the Boston, Concord & Montreal RR after a bitter fight.
